End User Domain Sales, Where The Money Is

OK, I admit it, I don’t have the years of domaining experience that many of the domain blog publishers that you see in my blogroll do. And there is no shortage of domain related blogs - probably too many for most of us to keep up with. So, why in the world do we need another domainer blog?

Well, I think there is a big gap in the market. In fact, it is this gap that drew me in to the domaining business. It’s the End User Sales Gap.

As I became interested in the domain business, and

Building A Professional Domain Sales Website

I’m going to go out on a limb here.

I spent a bunch of money and several months time having GeoBroker.com built. It’s a nice looking site and for the most part it works pretty well. But, I’m not as happy with it, or the company that built it, as I should be.

I want to add a blog to the site…

How Do You Sound On The Phone?

As much as we would all like to think we can be successful selling our end user domain names via email, the reality is that we are going to need to be on the phone to achieve high levels of success.

Take for example the geo windshield domains that I own:

“Is Your Domain For Sale?” How To Respond

“I just got an email from someone saying they are interested in one of my domains. I don’t even have it for sale, but if the price is right, I would sell it. How should I respond?”

This is a common question and one you should always be prepared to answer. This is how I respond:

Two Quotes To Help You Sell More Domains

When I’m on the phone with a prospective domain buyer, or corresponding via email, I like to use outside sources to validate a point that I’m trying to make. Doing this helps make a presentation more credible.

It’s one thing to make claims like, “domains are important” or “domains are valuable”, but it raises the bar if you use some evidence to

Craigslist Hates Domain Name Sellers

I wrote in an earlier post that I as testing the use of Craigslist to market my geo domains. I haven’t had much success, but I continue to post some listings and test different ad copy. Several of my ads have been flagged and deleted by Craigslist’s volunteer police force. This has happened even after I read their Terms of Use and did my best to be sure that my ads complied.

I’m testing the use of Google’s Adwords to see if they can be an effective sales generator for specific keyword domain names.

In the example shown here I’m advertising the domain name MontecitoCaliforniaRealEstate.com. Montecito is a very high priced community next to Santa Barbara - the median home price is $3.6 million.

Building A Domain Sales Site - Installing A Theme

As I mentioned in my earlier post about finding a Wordpress theme, a ‘theme’ is a pre-designed template that will include a specific graphic look and may include some built in functionality.

I’m using the premium theme WP-Vybe for GeoBroker.com. Upon purchase or selection of a free theme, download the theme files to your desktop and unzip the compressed file.

To install the file,

Update - Building A Professional Domain Sales Website

I’ve fallen seriously behind on providing updates to the Building A Professional Domain Sales Website series. As I started the rebuild of GeoBroker.com I found it to be difficult to work on the site and write posts at the same time. I will finish the series - in detail - over the next several days.

Here is an update on the current status of the project…

Building A Domain Sales Site - Finding A Theme

One of the great things about the popularity of Wordpress is the huge number of custom themes that have been created for it. A ‘theme’ is a pre-designed template that will include a specific graphic look and may include some built in functionality.

There are literally hundreds of free themes, just Google, “free wordpress themes” and you will be overwhelmed with choices. I used the free Adsense optimized theme ProSense for my mini site, Montecito California Real Estate. To date,

If you have selected a hosting company, installed Wordpress and changed your domain names servers (DNS), you should have a home page that looks like this (although I’ve already added the first post in this screen shot).

Building A Domain Sales Site - Select A Hosting Company

Welcome to the official first step of building a domain name sales site. As I mentioned in my first post on this topic, I will be building the site on the self hosted version of Wordpress.

Before we get started building the site let me follow-up to comments made in my first post. I spoke this morning with the existing developer/hosting company for GeoBroker.com and I was correct,

Convert GoDaddy UPPERCASE Domains to lowercase

Convert GoDaddy UPPERCASE Domains to lowercase

Like many domainers, I keep my domain names organized in an Excel spreadsheet. Also like many domainers I buy and keep some domains at Godaddy. For some unknown reason, GoDaddy thinks domains should be all CAPITALIZED. Whether you download your GoDaddy inventory in a spreadsheet, or cut and paste from an order confirmation email - the domains from GD are in all caps.

ALL CAPITALIZED WORDS ARE HARD TO READ, PERIOD.

This is especially true when you have a column of hundreds, or thousands, of domain names in a spreadsheet.

Nervous, But I Kept Raising the Paddle

Auctions do something interesting to your brain. If everyone is buying, you want in. But, if few are buying and you’re bidding, you have to ask yourself if you’re the smartest, or the dumbest guy in the room.
Yesterday I kept right on bidding for the name I came to buy - CountryClubs.com.
